Our Mission

The Fresh Air Learning Society provides an outdoor learning environment for children ages 2 to 12 years old and works in partnership with the New Westminster School District’s Island Discovery program to offer an elementary program for school-aged homelearners. We also run professional development programs for teachers.

Our programs are based in North Vancouver and Vancouver and are based on a student-centered, inquiry and play-based curriculum. We strive to help children and their families foster a connection to the natural world and their communities.

We believe in the importance of connecting children to the land and providing them with opportunities to learn and grow in natural ways. Our facilitators and  volunteers are passionate about children and the natural world. We believe in engaging children’s imagination, modeling a sense of awe for the natural world, and using experience as the basis for learning. Simple activities linked with unstructured play can teach many valuable academic and social skills, like cooperation, communication, and leadership.
